Review written for Laksh's "Thoughtful Thursdays".

The book written by khaled hosseini depicts the life of two Afghan women Mariam and Laila along with the political changes in Afghanistan as a background.Part 1 portrays the life of Mariam and how she ends up as the wife of Rasheed.Part 2 introduces the readers to Laila, describes her life and the circumstances which leads to her becoming the 2nd wife of Rasheed. In Part 3 we get acquainted with the tiffs between laila and mariam, later their reconciliation, the brutal treatment of his wives and daughter,a shocking twist leading to the teaming of laila and mariam to fight back against Rasheed.Part 4 gives details of the start of a new life for laila and things she finds about mariam. The story ends on an happy note.

Hosseini makes the readers aware of the plight of Afghani women due to the existing political reign.Through the course of the story Afghanistan undergoes a series of political changes from monarchy to authoritarian rule(Taliban).Hosseini has cleverly made use of the political changes to develop the story. The language of the story is simple throughout and will make the readers live through the horrors experienced by the two women.
I recommend everyone to read this book and i think the book deserves a rating of four stars out of five.
